Symmetry
Symmetry is a simple but effective composition technique in photography. By arranging shapes, lines or subjects symmetrically within the frame, you can create a sense of order, calm and balance.
The following photograph is an example of a symmetrical composition. The left and right sides of the image have a very similar structure.
Mirror Symmetry
When two halves of an image or object are exact mirror images of each other, this is called mirror symmetry.
The photograph above is symmetrical, but it is not perfectly mirrored. For example, the lighting differs slightly. In a perfectly mirrored image, these differences would also be reflected.
Static Balance
Symmetry can give an image a sense of balance and stability. A symmetrical composition often creates a feeling of stillness and order. This characteristic is also known as static balance.
Symmetry also occurs frequently in nature, for example in the shapes and structures of many flowers and plants.
Why Use Symmetry?
Symmetrical photographs can present a subject in a surprising way. By mirroring a scene from left to right or from top to bottom, the image can take on an appearance that differs from reality.
The following photograph also shows symmetry. In addition, the reflection on the surface strengthens the visual effect of symmetry.
Geometry
In symmetrical photographs, geometric shapes often stand out as a result of the symmetry. Reflections can create triangles, circles, arches and other regular patterns.
Apparent Symmetry
A photograph does not have to be perfectly symmetrical for us to perceive it as symmetrical.
The photograph is not perfectly symmetrical, but it creates that impression. The composition is regular and conveys a sense of calm and balance. However, the left and right sides are not exact mirror images.
Experimenting with Symmetry
The following photograph is not exactly symmetrical either, but its composition suggests symmetry.
None of the photographs shown here were digitally modified afterwards to create symmetry. The images were deliberately composed so that symmetry or apparent symmetry was visible at the moment of taking the photograph.
Symmetry as a Composition Technique
Symmetry is an interesting composition technique for photography. Once you start paying attention to it, you suddenly notice symmetrical elements, shapes and structures in many places. It is certainly worth experimenting with symmetry in your photography.
